Caricatures take a person’s most noticeable trait and exaggerate it. This week, editorial cartoonists used John Bolton’s bushy, white mustache to great effect in their visual commentaries on the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, threw the Senate proceedings into a tizzy after a draft of his book manuscript was leaked to the New York Times. In it, Bolton claims Trump directly told him he was withholding aid to Ukraine until officials there announced investigations into the Bidens. That appeared to provide the firsthand account of the “quid pro quo” that Republicans had been clamoring for since the House impeachment hearing wrapped up. But Senate Republicans voted Friday not to hear from Bolton, or any other witness. Trump’s acquittal is all but assured.
Other news vying for the cartoonists’ attention this week included a growing outbreak of a novel coronavirus that began in China. By week’s end, airlines had canceled flights to China, and U.S. authorities were quarantining visitors returning from China to prevent the spread of the virus. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global health emergency. U.S. public health officials were quick to note that the flu poses a bigger threat to Americans.
A pall hung over the basketball world, which mourned the deaths of retired Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna. They and seven others were killed when their helicopter crashed into a fog-shrouded hillside. Bryant’s death inspired emotional tributes, and also provoked a discussion about his complicated legacy, which included a sexual assault accusation in 2003.
