Here is a selection of cartoons from the more than 1,400 we published in weekly galleries on Syracuse.com during 2019.
The year began with a standoff between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Donald Trump over funding for a border wall, and ended with the president’s impeachment.
In between, controversies erupted over treatment of migrant children in U.S. custody; diplomacy between Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un; trade wars and tariffs; release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election; the 50th anniversary of the moon landing; the crowded race for the Democratic presidential nomination; and two articles of impeachment adopted over Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.
The weekly editorial cartoon gallery also is a reminder of news that flared up and then just as quickly fell out of the public’s consciousness, such as: the U.S. pullout from Syria; the devastating hurricane that hit the Bahamas; health worries over vaping and subsequent state and federal bans; mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio; a controversial rewriting of the Emma Lazarus poem on the Statue of Liberty to reflect the Trump administration’s “public charge” rules for immigrants; pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong; the fire that nearly destroyed the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris; Trump’s undying criticism of the late Sen. John McCain; Facebook privacy scandals; and a measles outbreak due to distrust of vaccines.
