After a bruising, 12-hour debate over the rules on Tuesday, House Democrats presented 24 hours of opening arguments over the next three days. The president’s lawyers get their turn next. After that, senators get up to 16 hours to ask questions, in writing. Then they will take up the contentious issue of whether they should hear from witnesses. Former Vice President Joe Biden shot down a “witness swap” floated early in the week that would have involved testimony from National Security Adviser John Bolton and Biden’s son Hunter, whose business activities in Ukraine are under scrutiny.
Depending on their viewpoint, the trial was a burning at the stake gone wrong (Scott Stantis), a foregone conclusion (Walt Handelsman), a partisan attack on the Constitution (Mike Luckovich), a distraction from real issues (Michael Ramirez), an abstract painting (A.F. Branco) or fulfillment of a prophecy by Alexander Hamilton (David Horsey).
Other topics in the cartoons this week include the prickly relationship between Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren; Hillary Clinton’s “nobody likes" Sanders comment; the annual gathering of business and government elites at Davos, Switzerland; and the demise of Mr. Peanut.
