Pelosi answered May Impeachment question in September: Darcy cartoon - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The accompanying cartoon was first published on May 23, 2019. Seven months later House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Donkey skull answered the question.

September 24, four months after the cartoon was posted, Speaker Pelosi announced the start of a formal Impeachment Inquiry. On December 18, the House voted to pass two Articles of Impeachment against President Donald Trump for Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress, making him the third U.S. President to have been impeached.

Back on May 23, Pelosi was still being pressed to open an Impeachment inquiry, based in large part on the findings in the Mueller Investigation Report, which she was long reluctant to do.

Now the questions are when will Pelosi send the two Articles of Impeachment to the Senate so Trump’s Impeachment trial can proceed? And will Trump be Impeached a second time by the House?

In court communication, House counsel Douglass Letter indicated the House could open a 2nd Impeachment proceeding against Trump should testimony from former White House counsel Don McGahn be incriminating.

If McGahn’s testimony produces new evidence supporting the conclusion that President Trump committed impeachable offenses that are not covered by the Articles approved by the House, the Committee will proceed accordingly - including, if necessary, by considering whether to recommend new articles of impeachment,” wrote attorney Letter.

Pelosi has held sending the current Articles to the Senate until Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell agrees to parameters that would assure fairness and impartiality that his oath for the Impeachment trial commands.

President Nixon’s former White House counsel, John Dean, in a recent TV interview, contends that there is nothing to legally prohibit Pelosi from waiting until after the 2020 November election to send the Articles to the Senate. Dean based that on his study of Impeachment law, present and past, from his involvement in Watergate.
