Cartoon Mania - Vacaville Reporter

Giggles, squeaks and howls erupted Saturday morning from the Vacaville Public Library, Town Square, where youngsters and the young at heart gathered to celebrate cartoons.

Nope, not Scooby Doo or the Flintstones or even G.I. Joe — the quarterly “PJs and Toons” event had a retro vibe.

Meaning, true black and white classics from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Seated on a comfy rug or in seats ringing a conference room, at least 20 kids and adults of all ages enjoyed bottled water and snacks provided by the Friends of the Library while paying rapy attention to the silver screen. That is, the flat screen TV mounted to the wall.

The youths wiggled and rolled, crawled and strolled and cuddled their loved ones — including a few plush friends —  while catching some must-watch TV.

Four cartoons were played.

The first, a Silly Symphony production, featured animals in wintertime. There was ice skating, dancing, bears about to go into hibernation and and a snowstorm that the critters, including reindeer and a beaver, eventually overcame.

Next up, a Tom and Jerry performance.

But these characters weren’t the familiar cat and mouse but two human pals having issues at sea.

Upon washing ashore lots of fun hijinks ensue, to the delight of those watching the 1931 feature.

The kiddos giggled as walruses and penguins appeared and disappeared,

Close encounters with chaos and monsters crept up in a 1942 Superman toon, where a trip to a museum turns testy. A malfunction leads to ice melting which unleashes a previously frozen arctic creature that resembles a skinny Godzilla on the world.

He stomps through the city terrorizing motorists, bashes a dam and sends water flooding into a village and clomps over to a bridge, stomping it.

But Superman saves the day, putting everything right and stopping said monster with a powerful punch to the throat.

The kids ooh and aahhh through the production, perhaps feeling for the monster, who’s actually kind of cute and just, well, dangerous.

Last but not least was a 1953 showing of Casper the Friendly Ghost.

The baby ghost is just too sweet, much to the chagrin of his elders. On a mission to scare people he instead befriends a young seal and they play. He eventually saves the creature from an angry polar bear and literally scares the fur from its body.

Ellen Ellis said it’s the first time she and her 18-month-old daughter, Athena, have attended the program but will definitely do so again.

“We love it, all the library programs are so good,” she said. “And seeing all our friends and how they (the youth) react.”

Megan Morris also thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Her twins, 18-month-old Henry and Savannah, had a great time, she said. She held Henry while Savannah had her grandma all to herself.

“It’s really fun how a lot of different ages get involved,” Megan said.
